We've had the privilege of collaborating closely with Uncommon Creative Studio (UCS) since their establishment in 2017 and it was a true delight to be part of their latest immersive venture with EA Sports – a remarkable global event held in Amsterdam celebrating the launch of EA's inaugural product under the newly introduced EA SPORTS FC™ brand, EA SPORTS FC 24.

In partnership with INCA, Uncommon approached us with a fascinating sonic challenge: to create an immersive experience that emulates the sound of the iconic football tunnel walk. This tunnel would become the entrance to the main event stage through which all guests would pass, and we set out to re-create that exhilarating feeling of walking through the belly of the beast, emerging to the thunderous roar of an impassioned crowd.

The journey began at the tunnel's entrance, the crowd noise resembling the roar of an ocean, with chants and drums being felt through the weight of the bass. We then introduced more intricate elements; the sounds of boots on solid ground and players' voices, occasionally punctuated by subtle background noises, all meticulously chosen to set the scene. As guests advanced through the tunnel, the sound evolved. It gained clarity, volume, and stereo width, whilst gradually shedding the more intimate layers of sound. The crescendo of crowd chants and blaring horns reached its zenith at the tunnel's exit.

Given that the experience was designed to be an evolving walkthrough, we couldn't afford for the sound to remain static and with no predetermined show control or set running time, we had to devise an adaptable technical and creative design approach. To ensure that the audio naturally evolved as guests walked down the tunnel we collaborated closely with the live event team and developed an effective speaker configuration with distinct mixes for each that would subtly blend through the different phases of the sonic journey.

While guests waited for the main event to begin, they settled into their seats on the bleachers and were enveloped in the full stadium experience of our soundscape. To prevent auditory fatigue during the wait, we crafted an extended loop that mimicked the perspective of someone seated higher up in the stadium. This loop featured iconic chants from various regions, traversing the stadium from end to end. Crowd reactions, horns, and distant snare drums were deftly woven in to convey the vastness of a huge football stadium.
